The Influence of Melt-Spinning Conditions on the Physical Properties of Polypropylene Filaments Shahram Arbab,Ehsanollah Nosratian and Mohamadreza Mohades Mojtahedi
Abstract
Three kinds of polypropylene resins with different melt flow index (MFI) values were melt-spun at different spinning temperatures and take-up speeds. The extrusion rate was set to result in fibers with similar linear density. Thus the effects of fiber diameter on the mechanical properties were omitted. The effects of different spinning conditions on the physical such as birefringence and density of the fibers were investigated. It was
shown that increasing spinning temperature caused an increase or a decrease in the properties of the fibers due to different effects of temperature on the melt viscosity, mobility of polymer chains, chains orientation and
nucleation and growth rate of crystallites. Increasing the take-up speed caused an increase in the fibers density
at all temperatures and for all samples Keywords: polypropylene, spinning temperature, take-up speed, birefringence, density
